Painted Petals Free Standing Pop Up Card

My friend Jan's birthday is on Monday and this is the card I gave to her from me at card group last Thursday.  I haven't made a free standing pop up card in a long while and it was fun to make one again.  An unusual card that folds flat to go into an envelope is definitely a good thing!  I used a recent eBay purchase, the SU! 'Painted Petals' stamp set.  I love the watercolour effect of these pretty floral stamps!

My colour combo was Strawberry Slush, Wild Wasabi and Whisper White.  I cut an 11" x 4 1/8" piece of Strawberry Slush CS and scored at 1", 2 3/4", 3 3/4", 5 1/2", 7 1/4", 8 1/4" and 10".  I cut a slit along the centre score line for the image panel to slide through.  The Splitcoast Stampers website has a Free Standing Pop Up Card Tutorial HERE if you'd like to check that out.  Here's a front view of the card on display.

Here's a view of the card folded flat ready to be placed inside an envelope.  Personally, I prefer to position any dimensional elements towards the top so they don't get caught up in the slit so I was careful to place the butterfly at the top!  You can choose to add dimensional elements and/or bulky embellishments but you then have to ensure you cut a wider slit to accommodate them.

I adhered a stamped message panel to the back of the card and stamped the envelope flap.  Jan very sadly lost her husband Alan a few months ago and I'm conscious that this first birthday on her own is going to be an ordeal.  So I chose not to use a 'happy birthday' sentiment, opting for 'Best Wishes' and 'With Love' instead.  

I also stamped the front of the envelope and added a die cut name label and a butterfly.

May 2016 Card Group Projects

This afternoon we got together for our May card group meeting.  I can't believe we're in May already, this year seems to be hurtling by!  We had two birthday girls this month and they both bought home made cakes for us to enjoy with our cuppas.  Janet made simnel cupcakes and Sue made a chocolate traybake and both were very scrummy indeed!

The first card was CASEd from this design by Julie Davison, I really liked Julie's method of making a pop up card - different and fun!  I made a Marina Mist A6 sized card base, glued dotty paper to the bottom and drew a line above the paper with a Night of Navy marker.  I stamped the beautiful flourish from the SU! Timeless Textures set a few times in Marina Mist ink after stamping off once, stamped the sentiment and die cut the stitched square.  I die cut a larger Night of Navy stitched square, offset the two squares, added a white photo corner to the Night of Navy square and added a stamped and punched butterfly to the white square.

After watching Julie's tutorial video I made the pop up insert for inside the card.

I love how the acetate makes it look like the butterfly is floating!

I stamped that beautiful flourish again on the envelope flap to finish.

The SU! Gorgeous Grunge set is such a great set to stamp with and I thought the Timeless Textures set would work alongside it perfectly so I bought that set recently and was keen to get inky with it.  You'd think stamping a grungy background would be so easy but I found I needed to experiment a fair few times to get a good mix of colours.  I also wanted the right amount of coverage so that the background wasn't too busy and the overall look was balanced and pleasing to the eye.  There were quite a few rejected backgrounds before I was happy!

I stamped the distressed edge image all the way around the Very Vanilla square in Crumb Cake ink and I stamped a honeycomb background image in Crumb Cake ink also.  I stamped Soft Suede splatters, coffee cup rings in Early Espresso ink and one large splotch - also in Early Espresso ink.  I inked the edges of the Very Vanilla square with Early Espresso ink, glued the panel to a mat layer of Early Espresso CS and glued that to the front of a 5 1/4" square cream card base.  I stamped the coffee mug in Early Espresso ink onto Crumb Cake CS and fussy cut it.  I stamped the coffee portion onto a scrap of Early Espresso CS and cut that out and paper pieced it onto the mug.  I stamped the oval, punched a small hole in it to make a tag and tied it to the mug handle with linen thread.  I thought 'Warm Wishes' was a good sentiment to go with a mug of coffee card!

A few stamped background images decorated the inside of the card and the envelope flap.

The third card design was another CASE of a card I saw while browsing on Pinterest.  I wanted an opportunity to use my new SU! Bold Butterfly Framelits dies and I loved this card made by Bibi Cameron so I decided to make my own version.  I made a Basic Black A6 sized card base, cut a mat layer of Whisper White Thick CS and cut out the large butterfly shape.    I glued the green dotty paper to the card front and popped up the mat layer.  I die cut the smaller butterfly from Whisper White Thick CS and I discovered that the inner pieces stayed put inside the shape.  I then cut a smaller butterfly from Basic Black CS, removed the inner pieces and layered the black shape over the top of the white butterfly shape.  I glued the butterfly body flat to the dotty paper but placed half a Dimensional under each wing with the backing paper left on so that the wings stay popped up.    I die cut a Basic Black Fishtail Flag banner, stamped the sentiment, fussy cut it and attached both to the bottom right of the card.  I completed the card front by adding some silver sequins.

Here's a close up of the butterfly element showing a lovely embossed edge around the butterfly shape.  Bibi used watercolour paper for her mat layer - using any thick card will give you that embossed edge and I loved that look so that's why I used Whisper White Thick CS for my mat layer.

Holly Present Merry Christmas Card - 52 {C}CT September Theme Challenge

It's theme challenge time this week at 52 {C}CT and the theme is "Gifts of the Season".

I made my square card look like a wrapped gift with a tag.  I cut a piece of patterned paper and taped two strips of the lovely sparkly ribbon behind before attaching it to the front of my card.  The ribbon was tied round the fab Christmas gift Kelly sent to me last year and I saved it as I knew it would be perfect for a card one day! I die cut the tag, stamped the sentiment, cut out 3 holly sprigs from the patterned paper and glued those to the tag.  I punched a hole in the tag, threaded some more ribbon through, added some silver thread tied in a bow and popped up the tag on the card front.

 

When you open the card - ta dah!  Inside there's a pop up gift.  I used flocked holly paper and sparkly red CS to die cut the gift and I attached a silver snowflake charm brad to the bow.  I layered the sentiment onto a sparkly red mat.  At the bottom I added holly paper and sparkly red strips.

 

For the envelope flap I punched a sprig of holly from the flocked paper and added red sparkly berries to finish off.  What a fun card to put together!  I hope you have as much fun as I did when you make your own creations for our challenge this week!  Don't forget to check out the fab inspiration on offer from the other members of the DT!

Everyday Enchantment Hello & Happy Thoughts Card

I've been playing with the gorgeous Everyday Enchantment papers and the Elementary Elegance stamp set and I made this Hello card.  I used Poppy Parade, Pool Party, Lucky Limeade and Peach Parfait as my colour combo and stamped with Early Espresso ink.  I LOVE that flowery paper, it's my favourite patterned paper from SU! for sure!

Kaitlyn, a sweet blog reader, recently emailed me a lovely message, bless her!  Kaitlyn wanted some info about the pop up cards I'd made and I replied saying that I would make a pop up card and take progress photos along the way for her.  After I'd finished the card I sent it to Kaitlyn so she has this card as a reference as well as the photos I'd emailed earlier.  Hopefully, she will be popping up to her heart's content now!

I always use the Sizzix Pop Ups die to make pop up cards - you definitely don't need a die, you can just cut and score strips of CS - but if there is a tool that makes something easier then you can be sure I'll choose to use a tool!

I punched the flowerpot and gave it a contrasting rim.  I used SU! flower punches for the flower and added a gorgeous brad to the centre.  Before attaching a pop up element I always make sure that it will fit inside when the card is closed - I'm not keen to make THAT mistake again LOL!  I cut a CS strip for a stem, added the leaves and glued the pot to the pop up.  I then added the patterned paper, punched strip, sentiment and the butterflies.

Here's the envelope, I couldn't resist using more of the pretty papers to make a matching envelope!

March 2012 Card Group Projects

Today was our March card group get together and these are the cards we made. I really thought I'd amass quite a few brownie points last month - I mean, come on, 3 masculine cards?!  But no, I was told last month that the majority of my masculine cards featured leaves or trees and that I needed to do something different.  That was absolutely right of course - and hey, who am I to argue against getting new supplies?  So I've used my new 'Lighthouse' set of stamps from Kanban for this first card - and look, there's that window die again!

I stamped the scene onto white CS, coloured with inks and a water brush and trimmed it to fit behind the window.  After I'd done it I wished I hadn't used plain white CS so I took watercolour paper to card group for the ladies to use.  Watercolour paper is so much nicer to colour onto as it doesn't pill, much more forgiving!  The window frame is cut from Crumb Cake CS and was stamped with the woodgrain using Soft Suede ink.  I glued the scene panel flat to the card and popped the window up.  The sentiment finished off the card front.

The Kanban set has a lovely compass image in - but it's only a quarter of the whole circle and I really wanted a full compass image.  I found one in a Tim Holtz cling set which I managed to snap up from eBay at a great price  So I've stamped the compass inside a few times and added a sentiment.

Ta-da - inside is a pop up cupcake!

The cupcake was made with a set of Sizzix medium Sizzlits dies.  It gives a good size cupcake for a surprise pop up card.  The cupcake liners were cut from a sheet of SU! Springtime Vintage patterned paper - I thought it was the perfect choice!  I embossed the icing with a dotty embossing folder and added a cherry on top.  I stamped a lace doily for the sentiment circle to sit on.

A nice simple card to finish off as we needed to make one that wasn't too time consuming.  This card features a flower made with punched out hearts.  I saw this idea used on a card at the Glitter Pot - on their card they'd used a small heart punch for several flowers on a card.  I wanted to use my large SU! Full Heart punch to make a bigger flower.  The hearts were punched from some gorgeous My Mind's Eye double sided paper and each shape was edged with Broken China Distress Ink.  To assemble the flower I  punched a 2" CS circle and glued the hearts onto that.  I placed a small pop up foam dot at the top of one side of each heart to give a bit of dimension.  Whilst looking in my stash for a suitable centre for my flower I found a few of these gorgeous blue flower buttons but I didn't have enough for card group.  I had to get a few more from the shop - luckily I got the last few they had left, phew!  The bottom of the card was stamped with an elegant Penny Black background stamp.  A Regal Rose strip and a sentiment finished off the card.

Snowman Free Standing Pop Up Card

One of the U Stamp Cards with Cool Moves projects was a free standing pop up card.  I've made these before but it was such a long time ago so high time I made another one!  I really loved using my happy snowman stamp to make the diorama card a few days ago so I dug out the Giant Snowman stamp this time as I thought he'd be the perfect size for this card.

You can see I love this snowman image so much, I have him in two sizes plus a smaller image that I use on envelopes!  To colour in my snowmen images, I tapped ink from pads onto a ceramic tile and used a waterbrush to pick up the colour.  I've added crystal ultrafine glitter to the large snowman plus red gems for the holly berries on his hat.  The Old Olive panel is popped up.  I used a bookplate die for the sentiment and added punched snowflakes with gem centres.  Some lush spotty Razzleberry ribbon finishes the card off.

This photo shows the card closed.  I love how the bottom slides up so the card folds flat for posting!  You can see my new card stand in this photo too.  I saw Graham Hansford demo at the Glitter Pot a few weeks ago.  He was selling MDF desktop caddies to store CS in and I bought one from him.  He was displaying the cards he'd made in MDF card holders and I asked if he was selling those too - they looked ideal for taking photos of cards that don't stand up!  Anyway,  Graham said he wasn't selling them but he very kindly gave me one to take home - what a sweetheart!  I painted it with acrylic paint - I'm really chuffed with it!

Butterflies Spiral Pop Up Card

One of today's U Stamp with Dawn & Friends Cards with Cool Moves projects was a spiral pop up card.  I've never made one of those before so I thought I'd give it a go.  I used the Flight of the Butterfly stamp set and my Cottage Wall papers.  Quite a fun card to put together but what I really struggled with was getting good photos, especially of the inside!  It's very grey, damp and miserable here today so the light is awful and I had to resort to the light tent.

The card measures 12 cms square and is made with SU! Pale Plum CS.  I swiped Razzleberry ink around the patterned paper panel before gluing that to the card front.  After punching the butterfly I ran an embossing stylus down both sides of the body to pop the wings up.  Then I cut a dimensional in half and put one half under each wing - leaving the backing paper on - which means the wings stay popped up.  I also stamped a butterfly border on the envelope to match.

This photo shows the inside with the spiral pop up element.  Because the two middle butterflies can be seen from above and below, I stamped and cut out two and glued them back to back.

I swiped Old Olive ink around a panel of patterned paper and glued that to the back of the card and this is where I shall write my message.

Birdie Pop Up Slider Birthday Card for Jan

This is the birthday card I made for Jan - using her Bird On a Branch stamp set I've borrowed, how cheeky! She is loving the fact that I didn't like this set when I first saw it in the Mini Catalogue but then I asked to borrow it from her! I really like it now I've played with it and I've ordered it this month so Jan can have her set back LOL! I decided to make a pop up slider card after seeing this lovely card on Joanne's blog. It reminded me I haven't made one for ages. I made one for Owen's birthday in 2007 and haven't made one since, I don't know why, they're a great design! I was inspired to use Melon Mambo with black and white and the popped up square in circle frame after seeing this post on Jenny's Stamping Moments blog.

I adjusted the measurements as I wanted to make a 5 3/4" square card. This photo shows the front of the card.

I spritzed the black circle in square frame with Champagne Mist Shimmer Paint for a touch of sparkle. Here's a close up photo.



Finally, here's a photo showing how I decorated the envelope. I stamped a flower from the Greenhouse Garden set for the envelope flap - a set I also borrowed from Jan! I really expected to love the Greenhouse Garden set but after playing with both sets the Bird On a Branch set ended up as my fave.

May 2010 Card Group Projects

Today was our May card group meeting and the projects were two pop up cards and a gift box. We used the Sizzix Bigz Pop Ups die which makes pop up cards so easy to make.

The first card is a pop up cupcake card made with a 4" x 4" textured white card blank. Here's the front:

The second card has a pop up gift inside. We used the SU! Circle Circus stamp set and got busy with circle punches! Here's the front:

The gift box was demonstrated to us last week by Joanne at the SU! workshop. I thought I'd let my card group ladies actually make one themselves while the instructions were still fresh in my mind. The box is made with an A4 piece of CS which is scored at 7, 14, 21 and 28 cms, turned 90 degrees and scored at 7 cms. After the box was assembled, we used stamps from the SU! Petal Pizzazz and Circle Circus sets to decorate the front. We stamped one flower full strength and two paler coloured flowers by stamping off once first. The leaves were stamped off once first also.



As always, it was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. The ladies got their SU! goodies from last week's workshop so they were very happy about that!
